Gas & Electric Scooter Laws

This is what is on the books for our area Bakersfield Ca. Information below is from the Bakersfield Police Department.
Check for updates in your city new laws as of 1-1-16

Scooters

A motorized scooter is defined as any two-wheeled device that has handle bars, is designed to be stood or sat upon and is propelled by an electric motor, gas engine or other power source.  Riders of motorized scooters MUST be at least 16 years of age and wear an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) approved bicycle helmet, no matter the rider's age.
Many complaints stem from underage riders who violate rules of the road and/or fail to comply with the law, ride recklessly, and/or fail to wear the necessary safety equipment.

The operator of a motorized scooter MUST NOT:

Operate the motorized scooter on a roadway with a posted speed limit over 25 MPH unless the motorized scooter is operated in a Class II bicycle lane;

Exceed 15 MPH; (d) Operate a motorized scooter without a valid driver’s license or instruction permit.
Operate a motorized scooter without a valid driver’s license or instruction permit.

Carry passengers;

Carry packages unless one hand is free;

Ride on the sidewalk;

Leave the scooter parked on a sidewalk if it blocks pedestrian traffic;

Raise the handle bars above shoulder height;

Attach themselves by any means to another vehicle on the roadway;

Operate the motorized scooter while under the influence of drugs or alcohol;

Operate the motorized scooter during darkness without a white light to the front which is visible for 300 feet, a red reflector to the rear which is visible from 500 feet and white or yellow reflectors on the sides visible from 200 feet.

For complete information on the operation of motorized scooters research the California Vehicle Code at:

Our good friend of Bakersfield radio host Jaz Mckay and his lovely wife Laura needs your help
My friends, Laura and Jaz McKay are in need of your help. Laura was recently diagnosed with Cirrhosis of the Liver. Without a transplant her doctors are giving her less than a year.  In addition, Laura has been battling Lupus and RA. RA requires medication and which due to her liver condition she is unable to take. As a result she is left with indescribable pain. Friends and family are praying for her daily. Her condition is very serious and she will need more medical exams, procedures and care in UCLA's Medical Center. Jaz and Laura have minimal funds to cover the expenses of traveling to and from Los Angeles, however, the excruciating expenses of medical care alone are far above what most Americans can afford.  As a friend I am asking for your help. Please won't you consider a financial gift of love either large or small? Whatever you are moved to donate will be more than greatly appreciated! My friends are too humble and modest to ask for this kind of help so I am doing this for them. Please help! A correct liver match will not only prolong her life but could very well save her from losing it in this year. Thank you ALL so much for your generosity!  Donate here

Jaz and Laura want to especially thank Dr. Robin Matuk from Kern Gastroenterology Medical Group and Dr. Jan Mesink from the Practice for their dedicated care.
